Nominations Clarification 7 & Clean Up

We did it! Nominations are closed. Now we have a few days to clean the tagset up...which you can help with! Please look through your fandoms and let us know if you find:

• duplicates
• typos
• tags containing characters that don't belong in that fandom

We've already removed a bunch of duplicates and fixed a bunch of wandering tags, so even if you're all set with your relationships picked out you should go look at your fandoms anyway and make sure that none of your selected relationships were deleted in favor of a duplicate relationship.

For this round of clarifications I'm splitting things up differently. First we'll have new items that I need a response on, then outstanding items that I still need feedback on, then just some updates on the tagset for which feedback is not required.

New clarification items

Fandoms/Relationships slot

• Master and Commander - All Media Types — This is both a book series and a movie! Browsing the tag tells me that many people post fic that's only one or the other, so I don't think the AMT fandom is right for this exchange. If the nominator could please let us know which they would prefer, we'll change the tag and accept the relationship.
• The Adventure Zone — This isn't really a clarification, but you commented anonymously and I was worried you wouldn't see our offer on the last post! Please let us know if there's anything you couldn't nominate because your nominations page was locked.

Freeforms

• Dark — Nominator, this is way too vague. If we don't hear from you by the time sign ups open, I'll reject it.
• Poison — This is too general. "Character is poisoned" and "Hurt/Comfort - Poison" are both already in the tagset. If you want a different, third kind of posion(ing) please let us know, otherwise this will be rejected when sign ups open.
• real talk — I understand the meaning of the phrase real talk but I would like a clearer or more specific freeform.
• School Assignment — AO3 has synned this with "Written For A Class" which I expect is not what you mean. But I'm also not sure what you do mean. If we don't hear from you I'll accept this as "Character Does School Assignment" when sign ups open.
• Vid: Emotional Bridge Sequence — "Bridge" like the part of a song, or like a literal bridge? Full disclosure: neither of your mods can identify the bridge of a song so that's probably contributing to our confusion. Also, googling "Bridge Sequence" just brings up a bunch of yoga stuff...

Freeforms

• In-World Meta, Alternate Viewpoints, Worldbuilding: Narrative Bias — I assume you'll come back to our conversation on the last post and let me know, but I'm just noting here that these are lingering because I'm waiting to hear back from you. If we haven't by the time sign ups open, we'll accept using my suggestions.
• Famous Five style camping adventure — There are a bunch of famous fives so for clarity I would like this to be changed to something like "Camping Adventure - in the style of" followed by something specifying which famous five you mean. If we don't hear from you by the time sign ups open, I will pick whichever famous five seems most likely off of Wikipedia's list and hope it's the right one.
• Partisans or Resistance — For clarity I would like to accept this as "Partisan Military Force Or Other Resistance Activities" but am running it by you in case that doesn't imply what you actually want. If we don't hear from you by the time sign ups open, I will accept using my suggestion.

Misc. tagset updates

Fandoms/Relationships slot

• Arrow (TV 2012) — This is obviously part of DC's Arrowverse so we moved the tags.
• The Book of Lost Tales - J. R. R. Tolkien — We got around to removing these tags from the Silm fandom and they're now all huddled up under "The Book of Lost Tales - J. R. R. Tolkien" which we used our special mod powers to add to the tagset. Just so you know, in future exchanges where the Silm is already nominated you should nominate under a fandom tag that's not listed in the "tags with the same meaning" section of this page and be very careful about nominating this fandom and the Silm fandom together because you'll lock yourself out of your nominations page if AO3 thinks you've nominated the same fandom twice.
• TOLKIEN J. R. R. - Works & Related Fandoms — All tags under this fandom were rejected for reasons discussed in Nominations Clarification 7
• Constantine (TV) — Reports indicate that this is not generally considered part of DC's Arrowverse so we've left it separate. However, if the nominator would actually prefer it to be merged with DC's Arrowverse, they can provide their nominations page link and let us know and we'll do that.
• DC's Legends of Tomorrow — ...it turns out this is part of DC's Arrowverse! So we moved the tags.
• Jean-Luc Picard & Seven of Nine (ST:TNG) — Seven of Nine only appears in Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Voyager, so we have removed this tag.
• Tybalt & Capulet Family Members/Relatives (Romeo & Juliet) — I've changed this to "Tybalt & Capulet Family Members and-or Relatives (Romeo & Juliet)" to get rid of the /
• Ye Zun & Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan (Guardian TV) — I don't know how this slipped past me but it's been removed because / relationships are not allowed. Nominator should be advised that this is a gen exchange, for gen only, and that this kind of tag was specifically mentioned as not allowed in the nominations guidelines.
• Queerplatonic partner & Queerplatonic partner (OW) — Although QPPs aren't sexual or romantic they're also not gen, so we've rejected this tag.

Freeforms

• Outsider POV of Same-Sex Relationship in Historic Setting — I missclicked and accepted this into the tagset but a work focused on a same-sex relationship isn't gen no matter what POV it's from, so this tag has been removed.
• Characters worry friendship might turn romantic but it doesn't — Although it would be impossible for us to outright ban pre-ship gen and things like it, this tag is too focused on a (potential) romantic relationship and has therefore been rejected.
• Lovers to Friends — This tag would result in either break up fic or two characters who were previously just having sex learning to be pals too. Either way it would be too focused on a romantic relationship, and has therefore been rejected.
• Pretending not to date leads to discovery that the characters are better off as friends — This tag would require a fic focused on two characters who are in a romantic relationship, and has therefore been rejected.
• Drunken Flirting — Honestly I forget if I rejected this immediately last night or if the nominator just came to their senses and removed it at the last minute but either way, but if I did reject it then it's because this is a gen exchange.

If you're saying that "Although QPPs aren't sexual or romantic they're also not gen", I just wanna let you know that there's a freeform tag for "Queerplatonic Relationships" that you've accepted.

While I like qpps and personally could see them being under gen, I understand why you're making this ruling. I'd like it to be consistent, though! Because I wouldn't be surprised if the nominator had seen the qpr freeform tag already in the tagset and been inspired by it!

Oh, you're right! I've removed that freeform, too, thank you for pointing that out.

I also really like qpps (which is probably why I accepted that freeform, then later was like "...wait, hang on" and thought more about it when the relationship tag came up) and I think they are definitely a grey area — if this were a shipping exchange instead I would probably also not allow QPPs for that.

What we really need is a QPP exchange...

Vid: Emotional Bridge Sequence

Bridge like the bridge of a song - it's the bit near the end that's unique from the verse or the chorus - and sequence like a sequence of video clips. It will be clear enough to vidders but you could put "song bridge" for maximum google-bility? I'm not sure how to improve on sequence.

Not the nominator, but in context they mean Enid Blyton's books - it's a typical plot set-up for her adventure books, especially the FF & they're well-known enough that it wouldn't have occurred to a nominator to disambig. (May they receive lashings of ginger beer for it and all. I'm sure it'll taste better out of doors.)

Hiya! I'm the nominator for both "School Assignment" and "real talk." For "School Assignment," I meant more like assigned to be part of a group that's going to turn in a specific project. Like: A and B get assigned a report on puppies as a motif in the literature of the X Dynasty. In other words, the dynamic between A and B as they work on the project is what is of interest to me, not the actual report on puppies, which I think is where "Written For A Class" takes us.

As for "real talk," I couldn't figure out how to say it, so I'll happily accept a substitution here; I meant when A and B decide to stop talking around a particular subject (say, B's rocky relationship with C or A's substance-abuse issues) and be completely frank and "tough love" in a discussion.

real talk — hmm yes partially I didn't offer a suggestion because I wasn't sure of a better phrasing myself. How about something like "Character A is honest & frank about difficult/awkward subject because they think B needs to hear it" or "A & B have an honest and completely frank discussion about difficult subject"?

Edit because I didn't read the whole post: I am the nominator of the partisans tag though! I'm not sure what's unclear in the tag as nominated, and "military force" feels a little weird connotation-wise, but as long as everyone's on the same page, I have no meaningful objections.

I am definitely open to phrasing it a different way but I want to make sure it's obvious that it's meant in the military use of the term rather than the political usage, since the political use is much more common (at least, for me, in the US). You're definitely right that the phrasing is a little awkward, but I had to literally go look up if there was a different meaning for the word "partisan" when it came through the approval queue...

Jin Siblings (MDZS) got turned into 'creator's choice of Jin Siblings', but what I meant was the canon group of four - Jin Zixuan, Jin Guangyao, Qin Su, and Mo Xuanyu.

Per the nominations guidelines all nominations without an & in them needed to be nominated with "Solo:" or "Group:" in front. Since I was editing the tag anyway, I also changed it to the preferred phrasing mentioned in our nomination guidelines. Whether or not I had added "Creator's Choice of..." to the front, you would still only be asking for a minimum of any two Jin siblings because that's how Group: nominations work. Nominations for specific characters needed to specifically name those characters.

I have spotted a duplicate in the Silmarillion tag set:

Maedhros | Maitimo & Maglor | Makalaurë (Silmarillion - Tolkien)
Maglor & Maedhros (Silmarillion)

This is the same pair of characters, but one nominator has used the piped tags. My preference is generally not to use piped tags, but up to you!

Hi! Someone's already used it so we can't remove it, plus your version requires the inclusion of all 6 Animorphs while "Group: Animorphs" just means the creator has to pick 2 at minimum, so I think they're probably different enough. But thank you!
